How to Stop a Panic Attack
Article by S. Edwards
I want to talk a little bit about panic attacks, and some methods I’ve found that help me personally. First of all, if you don’t know what it’s like to have a panic attack, it’s quite possibly the most unpleasant thing that I’ve ever had to deal with. Your skin gets hot, you start to shake, you can’t breathe. Among tons of other symptoms. Alot of people say they think that they’re having a heart attack when they experience their first panic attack.
The very first panic attack I ever had was when I was still in highschool and living with my parents. My dad came home and found me curled up in a ball on the bathroom floor, shaking, flushed, and completely oblivious to the world around me. I thought I was dying. He picked me up and set me on the shower floor and turned the water on cold. It was freezing, my clothes got soaked, and.. I felt 100 times better. It snapped me out of it almost instantly. So my first tip is cold water.
Another thing is convincing yourself. When you start to feel the symptoms coming on, tell yourself. “It’s just a panic attack, I’m going to be okay.” Often times you get so scared during a panic attack that it makes it worse, making the symptoms worse, making the overall experience..worse. If you grasp the concept of what is actually happening it works wonders.
And my last tip is controlling your breathing. We’ve all seen people breathing into paper bags when they’re anxious. Why? If you concentrate on your breathing it lessens the effects of a panic attack. Take deep breaths, and fill your lungs with air. The symptoms should subside quickly.
In any case, the best thing you can do for a panic attack? Stop having them. There are many places that offer different ways to cure panic attacks all together. My personal favorite is Panic Away. They have helped many, many people get their lives back through their services. If you’re interested in learning more, I’m attaching a link. I hope this information was helpful.
